Like many things Japanese, tradition and quality are valued for these companies, some of which go back for generations, if not hundreds of years. For the sake of comparison, I worked as a chef as well, and the Professional Gyuto Chef's Knife, 8 inch - 67 Layer Damascus Steel Blade - VG-10 Japanese Super Steel is my choice.
With Shoyeido incense, that same type of quality is represented, using a time-honored tradition passed down over the generations, and considered to be among the finest in the world. For another comparison, I enjoy the Ohsawa Nama Shoyu, Tamari, Soy Sauce and other fine products, aged in 150 year old cedar kegs, as well as their miso, and I know quality when I smell or taste it, I'm very sensitive in terms of my palate.
In the line of Shoyeido incense products, I like them all, but some stand out among the rest, it is largely a matter of preference. Their line of incense is extensive, so I encourage you to try the samplers and find the one which suits you best. The Shoyeido incense reviewed here is the Plum Blossoms, 150 stick box -Baiku-ju, a calming and relaxing/meditative blend which always brings a sense of balance to me. I only use a half stick at a time, just enough to infuse my office room with the light essence for hours.
What is most important about Shoyeido is not only what they do use, but also what they don't. This is a small solid pressed stick of pure incense, there is no wooden stick in the middle which causes excess smoke. There are no synthetic oils or fragrances, no animal ingredients, and no animal testing. You are getting the purest and lightest natural incense I've found on the market, with all natural ingredients, and with the least smoke and highest quality, at a fairly reasonable price.
As you'll see at the Shoyeido website, they have a very wide selection, and one of the longest traditions for quality incense. If you are new to the company, I recommend you give them a try, and you can find your favorites among those varieties!
"As it has been for over 300 years, Shoyeido incense is manufactured at our facility in Kyoto, Japan."
"Shoyeido incense is blended in Kyoto, Japan by our highly trained artisans employing centuries-old recipes and techniques. Specific ingredients are finely ground and mixed with pure water and a natural binding material called "tabuko" (machilus thunbergii). Because we use only natural components, the quality and ratio of each raw ingredient is critical to the final outcome. Moisture, drying time, and production methods are all major aspects of our blending process. Lacking the bamboo core seen in so-called "dipped" incense products, our mixtures are extruded, carefully shaped and then slowly dried. Shoyeido's manufacturing process is renowned for its quality and high standards."
"With respect for the environment and a concern for green practices, Shoyeido continues to set the standard in the market of fragrance. We have procured permits from the Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry in Japan, and the US Fish & Wildlife Department to validate that our products are properly accounted for and responsibly harvested. None of our recipes contain animal ingredients and no testing has ever been done on animals. "
Awesome! Placed my order yesterday and it arrived today.
The packaging is simple and elegant. It includes a few leaflets. Don't worry if the product sticker says "...50 sticks". I was thrown off by that, so I counted 50 sticks and the remainder looked like the same amount or more. All good!
It didn't include a stick holder, but I have one from another masala incense purchase. I just finished burning my first stick and it lasted for 37mins. The scent is a sweet, marshmallow cozy smell that isn't overwhelming. It reminds me of Satya's Nag Champa: Agarbatti, (which I enjoy) but a lighter version.
The quality is excellent, the quantity of 150 sticks for $13 is reasonable, and the scent is very gentle and enjoyable. I'm excited to try other incense by Shoyeido in the near future!
Pros: Light, pleasant, cozy sweet scent. Not too powerful or overwhelming, but will fill a living room space nicely. High quality product made in Japan. Experienced no headaches.
Cons: Doesn't include a holder, which may be disappointing if you don't have one.

There is a distinct vanilla taste to the air when it burns, but it is well balanced with the overall fragrance. Smoke level is nice and low, and there is a nice essence of the incense in the room for a few hours after burning a stick. The sticks burn for 30 mins. It is a sweeter scent than most of the other incense sticks we have. We only burn Japanese low smoke incense, so i cannot compare it to ones from other regions, except that these Shoyeido ones tend to be subtle and balanced, not overpowering like you would get in temples of other countries (at least the ones i have visited over the years).
To sum up, scent is calming, quiet, and relaxing, and it does evoke a memory of a warm early summer evening in a ripening ume orchard.
Top reviews from other countries
Since it has no core, it produces very little smoke and ash. It it small and does burn a bit quicker than other incense; I would estimate one stick lasts about 30 minutes. The scent is quite light and subtle, it lingers without dominating. Probably not effective for getting rid of very strong odours, if that's your goal.
